چکیده

Everyday observations usually seem self evident and are often not given the attention they merit. Examples are the fact that I haemolytic streptococci cause sore throat but not pneumonia; gonococci cause urethritis but not urinary tract infection (UTI) (which Escherichia coli do); and bacteria like Neisseria gonorrhoea and Bordetella pertussis that cause human disease are often harmless in animals. Bacterial adherence may play a role in this 'tropism'. In nature bacteria often stick to surfaces like stones, leaves, and roots. Epithelial cell surfaces make no exception. Bacteria belonging to the 'normal' flora as well as pathogens may adhere by hydrophobic or electrostatic bonds, or both, of an 'unspecific' nature, or through a specific interaction between bacterial adhesins and epithelial cell receptors.'-5 The ability of pathogens to adhere to mucous membranes is now recognised as a potential factor in virulence.

Role of cranberry juice on molecular-scale surface characteristics and adhesion behavior of Escherichia coli.

Cranberry juice has long been believed to benefit the prevention and treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs). As the first step in the development of infection, bacterial adhesion is of great research interest, yet few studies have addressed molecular level adhesion in this context. P-fimbriated Escherichia coli play a major role in the development of a serious type of UTI, acute pyeloneph...

Fimbriae of uropathogenic Proteus mirabilis.

Proteus mirabilis is a common causative agent of cystitis and pyelonephritis in patients with urinary catheters or structural abnormalities of the urinary tract. Several types of fimbriae, which are potentially involved in adhesion to the uroepithelium, can be expressed simultaneously by P. mirabilis: mannose-resistant/Proteus-like (MR/P) fimbriae, P. mirabilis fimbriae (PMF), uroepithelial cel...

The Gal(alpha 1-4)Gal-specific tip adhesin of Escherichia coli P-fimbriae is needed for pyelonephritis to occur in the normal urinary tract.

Nonobstructive acute pyelonephritis in humans is most often caused by P-fimbriated Escherichia coli. P-fimbriae are heteropolymeric fibers carrying a Gal(alpha 1-4)Gal-specific PapG adhesin at its distal end. The pyelonephritic strain DS17 expresses P-fimbriae from a single gene cluster. A mutant strain, DS17-8, which expresses P-fimbriae tacking the PapG adhesin, was constructed by allelic rep...

Expression of P fimbriae of uropathogenic Escherichia coli strains.

The occurrence of P fimbriae in a total of 222 uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) strains was investigated. Out of the total, 31 (14%) were P fimbriated. Of 24 pyelonephritogenic E. coli strains, three (13%) with P fimbriae occurred in children with clinical pyelonephritis, and of 198 E. coli strains 29 (15%) occurred in children with cystitis. Prevalence of P fimbriae of E. coli strains was...
